Establishing an XAE chapter
The journey to establishing a chapter of XAE at GCCC began with an information-gathering visit in May 1999 to Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to learn more about the university's Developmental Studies program. One piece of information gathered on that trip was the existence of XAE. In August 1999, GCCC began contacting XAE National about how to establish its own chapter. It was apparent that funding was needed to cover the start-up costs, so interested advisors submitted a Gulf Coast Community College Foundation Mini-grant proposal--a couple of times. Grant writing is something of an art, it seems. After receiving word that the mini-grant was approved, the action began. The interested advisors began meetings in February 2001, pre-screening of potential initiates was conducted, and plans to hold initiation and chartering ceremonies were under way.

On August 31, 2001, the "charter members" were initiated, and the chartering ceremony was conducted with the help of XAE founder Dr. Elbert Saddler from West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Please visit our chartering page to see pictures from the ceremony.

National XAE
Since its induction in the spring of 1990, Chi Alpha Epsilon has been successful enough in promoting academic achievement among students in college preparatory programs to receive endorsement by the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). GCCC's Beta Tau Chapter is the southern-most chapter out of more than eighty (80) chapters nationwide. For more information about XAE,
please visit the
National Chi Alpha Epsilon home page.

Initiate Qualifications
Induction into XAE is based on students having earned at least a 3.0 cum GPA as a full-time student for two consecutive semesters while beginning in college-preparatory studies.

XAE encourages continued academic success for its initiates by allowing for pin upgrades based on higher GPA's: Ruby, Emerald, or Diamond Key.

This Web site will be used to promote our society, its members, and a quality education for
a quality future. As this site develops, you'll be seeing pictures of the officers and members, advisors, and the campus in action. Visit our calendar page for an academic calendar as well as XAE events. Check often for updates.
